We took off in the morning fog from Fort Warden. Our first stop was for a latte once we hit hwy 20 again. Thats me in front of the logger. Anyway we veered off hwy 20 as much as possible. I discovered the walrus mailbox followed by the Discovery Bay Fire Department. A quick stop into the fire station to say hi to my fellow rescue workers. It was truly one of the most decadent volunteer fire houses I've ever seen. I loved the dalmation logo on the side of their aid car. Then we passed the interesting rock sculptures near the Slallum tribe reservation. Lunch was at a marina with great views of the bay. Then we headed off toward Port Angeles on back roads to the Olympic Discovery trail which would through lush forests, over old railway bridges, and then along the peninsula to Port Angeles. In Port Angeles we road through town and to Starbucks for coffee before arriving at our camp.
Camp was at a grade school right next to a major hwy. We would be there for two days. Not exactly the Hilton. Luckily I brought my ear plugs and was able to sleep through the traffic, honking horns, and road racers. Tomorrow was our rest day. We had a choice of riding up Hurricane Ridge, visiting Victoria by ferry, or going sea kayaking. I made plans to hook up with a friend and go sea kayaking for the day.
