A Huge Success for Mt. Bikers. This is a trial run for a solution to trail conflicts that have plagued Western Washington. Mt. Bikers have been allowed back on the Middle fork of the Snoqualmie trail on odd days. Even days are for hikers. For more info go to BBTCs website: www.bbtc.org
Opening weekend of the Mid Fork trail. How could I miss it. I went out on Saturday afternoon after work with a couple of friends for a great ride on the lower section of the Mid Fork trail. We did 12 miles. 6 on up the trail and 6 down the road. The trail was in perfect condition. Dry, hard packed, and well maintained. We ran into the BBTC group on their way back down the Dingford Creek trail. I think 27 people were signed up.
Then I went back on Monday with a group from BBTC. There were 27 riders signed up for the ride on Labor Day. The weather was crisp but sunny. It was a bit slick from dew on the logs, roots, and rocks but a great ride none the less. I have to say besides the great trail riding the Mid Fork valley is stunning. The trail follows the Mid Fork river and is surrounded by granite peaks. The trail winds its way through lush green mature forest with occasional views of a granite strewn river bed with jade green water. The bridges and boardwalks along sections of trail were beautifully done. Everything about this trail is amazing. At the top of Dingford Creek trail we relaxed in the warm sunshine. Some riders on the bridge and a few of us ventured the slick logs and rock for a riverside view. Steve Costa even took a dunk in the mountain fed waters of the river. He said it actually felt like a whirlpool bath where the water poured over the rocks and the sun warmed the water. I'll take his word on it. It just wasn't quite warm enough for me to venture into the waters. Next summer though. After a good long break a few headed up to the upper section of the trail and the rest of us rode the trial back to our cars. On the way back down I noticed a giant granite wall poking through the trees that I had missed on the way up. It was incredible. I also ran into Preston Peterson and Nick Pottier on their way up the trail as we were going back down. At the bottom it was back over the lower bridge and back to my car after a good ride.
What an amazing trail opportunity so close to the city. Thanks for all the hard work of the BBTCers who persevered in making the reopening of the Mid Fork a reality.
