Urban Sea Kayaking at Alki
I had the opportunity to go sea kayaking with Nick, a Federal Way Firefighter. Nick just paddled solo around Vancouver Island in June. Quite an acomplishment. Anyway, we decided to do an urban sea kayak adventure off of Alki Beach in Seattle. We started at the Alki Bakery with a stop for coffee and breakfast before starting. Then we headed out from the beach across the street. I was amazed at how light his kayaks were. My previous experience was with very heavy kayaks that were hard to carry from the vehicle the water. We carried both down at one time. A few preparations and we were off. There was a slight head wind but nothing that slowed us down. We paddled around the point where the light house is and then headed down to Lincoln Park to the south. Most of our view was of houses lining the hill sides and beach houses. Lincoln Park is a nice break from the urban development with its undeveloped hillside. I got a few good tips from Nick on my paddling technique that I hope I remember next time I go paddling.
From Lincoln Park we paddled back to the Alki Bakery for, ofcourse, lunch. Great way to do a kayak trip. Start and end at one of my favorite stops at Alki for great food and good coffee.
